Somethings just don't change

Oh well, time has changed drastically here in Mumbai, hasn’t it? Well for starters, it isn’t Bombay
anymore. The property rates are rising, sensex is falling and the economy is crawling. Amidst all this, we’d find a lot of things that haven’t changed. Umm, Congress is still the same, isn’t it? The only difference being that they are now out-of-power.
Anyways, getting back to Mumbai, what according to you hasn’t changed, huh? The people, their spirit, their enthusiasm? I’d say everything has remained unchanged, apart from the infrastructure. The core, the heart and the meaning of Mumbai has remained the same throughout. What is the meaning of Mumbai you’d ask? I say, Mumbai means freedom, Mumbai means enthusiasm. Mumbai means dreams, Mumbai means emotions.

So, here are 14 things about Mumbai that haven’t changed over the years.

1. The Unwavering Sea

Something so calm, soothing and refreshing is what everyone needs. One thing that sets Mumbai apart from all the cities out there is the Sea. There’s one for every person. There’s one for every mood.

2. The Not-not so Crowded Local trains

A coach, with a capacity of 150 people, cramped up with around 500 people. Is this what you’d call crowded? Local trains have always been Mumbai’s lifeline. This crowd just cannot stop people from travelling in it.

3. Vada-pav – Mumbaikar’s Burger King

Vada-pav forms a part of every Mumbaikar’s staple diet. Well, it is just sumptuously perfect. And the ‘sukha chutney’ adds just about perfect spice to our life and well, Vada-pav also.

4. Mumbai- One for the Dreamers

Every day, someone heads to Mumbai with a dream in mind and a penny in the pocket. Some succeed, some don’t. But that hasn’t stopped people from coming here. Mumbai will always be the city of dreams.

5. Bollywood

Bombay is where Bollywood started. Mumbai is where it developed. And our love for Bollywood is still as evergreen as Rajesh Khanna was.

6. Cutting Chai

Is there anything more refreshing than this? Hot cutting chai, in breezy monsoons and pleasant winters of Mumbai, is something that you just don’t miss.

7. Bambaiya Hindi

Boss, ye apun ki Mumbai! Apun aisaich bolega. The typical language of Mumbai is really entertaining. I mean, you could just listen to, two people blabbering in Bambaiya Hindi for hours and not get bored.

8. Traffic

Ah! Finally one thing you’d hate about Mumbai! Phew, traffic has always been that one aspect you wished had changed in Mumbai. But then, you’ve adjusted to this aspect.

9. Ganpati Visarjan

*danceslikeamaniac* Yes, that’s what happens in Ganpati Visarjans. And I’d be kidding if I say we don’t love it. The best way to cut loose, let it out and feel the atmosphere. It’s been that way and it will stay the same.

10. Khaugallis

*FOOOOOOOD* There are a few things; you won’t find anywhere better than the Khaugallis. I mean, they are cheap, lip smacking and make you go ‘YUMM.’

11. The ‘Jugaad’

Awwwn, Jugaad is our second name! Something will definitely pop-up, some solution, for every problem, in any case. Jugaad is something we all resort to, be it studies or be it life!

12. Our ‘Love’ for Delhi

Ahem, *sarcasm alert* Mumbaikars love Delhi. The love is so genuine, that the rivalry never stops. Well, everything has to be compared with Delhi, Food, buildings, transport, travel, people, every damn thing.
AND, and, and, Mumbai always wins.

13. Monsoons

How do I even start describing the Monsoons! It’s just perfect. Everything! Cutting chai & Vada-pav, by the beach, amidst the breeze and the drizzly rains. It just clicks. You cannot resist it.

14. The Mumbaikar spirit

The care-free attitude, the friendly & welcoming nature, the spirit of unity and the strength, this is almost everything that defines Mumbai. What Mumbai is today, is all because of its spirit and mind you, it’s never going to change!

Sudden love for Mumbai huh?
Well, it’s always been there.
We’re just the catalyst. Joule 3.0 is ready to go, are you?
Relive Mumbai on the 22nd and 23rd August.
We’ll be there, waiting for you!

Bombay is an emotion, not just a city!

Bombay, Mumbai, Bambaiiiiiii! Whatever the name, here’s where people have ‘earned’ fame! Mumbai, it’s a treasure hunt, hunt for the ‘key,’ the ‘Key to unlock their treasured dreams.’ Let’s rewind a bit and talk about dreams. In 1989, a young cricketer from ‘Bombay’ launched himself to the cricketing arena! We now know him as the ‘God of Cricket.’ Going along similar lines, Shreyas Iyer is climbing the stairs of stardom, Shreyas from ‘Mumbai.’
As years passed by, Bombay gradually became Mumbai, V.T became C.S.T. Trams went dysfunctional but in came the Metro! Amidst all these changes, there’s one thing that remained the same, something that defines Mumbai- the Spirit, Emotion & Dreams of every Mumbaikar! It is aptly said, Bombay is not just a city, it’s an Emotion!
Here’s why Bombay is an emotion and not just a city!
1. Life in Mumbai isn’t easy, but then, what is? Mumbai teaches you. It teaches you to adjust and deal with everything that comes your way.

2. Because you can always sense the fact, that there’s something, something new coming your way at every turn. It never ceases to Surprise!

3. There’s a beach for everyone, every mood, at anytime-any day. The Sea is your constant companion and you know that!

4. Because at every corner, you find an inspirational story being stitched, bit by bit into a completed dream.

5. Where else would you find people of all castes, creed, religion and sex enjoying together, in the same place, sitting together & enjoying a meal!

6. Mumbai is crowded, yes! Over-crowded, definitely. But, with emotion, passion & redemption and not people.

7. Where else would you find a new face, waiting outside a film studio or a director’s bungalow every day, just to be heard, just for that single break into stardom?

8. And then there is Nawazuddin Siddiqui & SRK who waited patiently, worked their way up and ruled Bollywood.

9. Dozens of people enter into this ‘Mayanagri’ every second, with just a dream and nothing more than a penny in their pockets.

10.  Well, the Local trains define Mumbai! Be it rich or poor, each one of them travel in the same train, the same compartment, neck to neck, knocking their shoulders!

11. This pacy life, the ever-changing city and the people make you think big & deal with problems and life-size scenarios!

12.  Every single aspect of this city, the crowded lanes, the people, make you think and turn it into something big.

13. No matter where you go, it’ll still be what you call HOME!

Joule 3.0 proudly presents its theme 'RETRO TO METRO - A City's tale o Transition!'
Because, Mumbai is where our heart lies.

In pursuit of acceptance

On 26th of June, 2015, the SCOTUS passed a historic judgement. Now, USA has become the 21st country in the world to legalise same sex marriage. The Court has ruled that the US Constitution grants every citizen equal rights and protection, irrespective of their sexual orientation and no state can ban same sex marriage. The USA has added its name to the list of countries that have legalised same sex marriage such as The UK, France, Norway, Spain, Sweden, etc. “No longer may this liberty be denied,” Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote for the majority in the historic decision. According to Justice Kennedy, ‘marriage is a keystone in our social order and that no union is more profound than marriage, for it embodies the highest ideals of love, fidelity, devotion, sacrifice and family. The decision was celebrated by gay couples all over The US. The social networks flooded with hashtags #LoveWins, #scotusmarriage, #equalityforall and many others.

Rainbow coloured flags were waved all over the States. The social media even went all colourful. Several accounts on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram uploaded their pictures in the rainbow colour. The Rainbow flag is an international symbol of LGBT pride. The flag was created in 1978 by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker. As he told MoMa in an interview, the idea began to take shape in 1976. Baker was a Vietnam War veteran and a drag queen. It was the year of the United States Bicentennial, and the American flag was inescapable. Baker created the first Rainbow flag in the attic of the Gay Community Centre in San Francisco with the help of nearly 30 volunteers. They soaked fabric in trash cans full of dye, fed them through a sewing machine, and laboriously ironed the strips at the other end. The massive banner flew for the first time in United Nations Plaza in downtown San Francisco on June 25, 1978. Following its debut, the Rainbow flag spread widely.

This victory didn’t come so easily though. For years, the LGBT community has been fighting for equality and acceptance in the society. Earlier, people found it odd to be gay. Those who came out were often ridiculed for their sexuality. Some religions called such relationships to be blasphemous. Many eastern countries declared it to be a ‘western disease’. Some called it a psychological disorder. Situations are quite different now. More and more people, including the ‘straight people’, are fighting for and supporting the LGBT community. More and more people are coming out proudly. A year ago, actress Ellen Page, known for her roles in Juno & X Men, came out at the Human Rights Campaign's Time to Thrive conference held in Las Vegas. She said, “I am tired of hiding and I am tired of lying by omission. I suffered for years because I was scared to be out. My spirit suffered, my mental health suffered and my relationships suffered. And I'm standing here today, with all of you, on the other side of all that pain.”

We know about her struggle because she is a celeb. There are many others like Ellen, who struggle to reveal about their sexuality because they’re afraid. Because they think of what others will think about them. They need not now. Because the law’s with them. It’s time people understood that love is unconditional and without any constraints. Things have certainly changed a bit in today’s times, though. A few religious communities, these days are open to same sex marriage. Even some parents are accepting and respecting their children’s choices. Such decisions act as a breath of relief for LGBT community all over the world and influence other countries to take proper steps.

THE SITUATION AT HOME:
Unlike what we saw above, the glorious picture of acceptance, the situation’s quite different in India. India is one of those countries that hasn’t legalized same sex marriage yet. Indians are still skeptical of the LGBT community. A family still feels ‘ashamed’ to admit the sexuality of a member if he/she is gay. They strongly believe it is out of the norm. The families take ‘special’ corrective measures, like ‘corrective rape’; to ‘correct’ their sexual orientations. It is such a shameful act. How can ‘rape’ be corrective? The people don’t even consider the implications of it on the child. A minister, once went too far, saying that he would open ‘correctional centres’ for the gay people and ‘cure’ them. The question that pops in one’s mind is: Is he trying to classify gay people in the same group as addicts? Many so-called politicians make strange statements. Many say, it’s a western disease, corrupting today’s Indian youth.

However, there are several Indian LGBT communities who voice constantly for their equality and acceptance in the Indian society.

It’s a long road ahead for LGBT people in India but someday, hopefully, the bureaucrats understand the essence of love and pass a law favouring such communities. Then, there will be no more hiding and no more lying. People can be free and happy, for happiness is the goal of everyone’s life.

Why so pseudo?

Since 600 years, the country of China, pompously celebrates “The Yulin Festival” where thousands and thousands of dogs are killed and eaten. How inhuman!

World over, this act is being condoned and looked down-upon as barbaric. Rightly so! But what about millions of other animals who are being slaughtered daily for food and fun? Are chickens, pigs, goat and cows any different than the dogs? Do they not suffer the same amount of pain and agony when slaughtered?

Just because the dog is “a man’s best friend” should he get preference over others? The worldwide protest against the Yulin Festival is inspiring and remarkable but shouldn't all life be treated as equal. This is like saying one human race should be preferred over others! How absurd and narrow, this kind of thinking is!

Science has proved that animals, just like us feel pain, fear and sorrow and some of the species even exhibit these emotions. For instance, it has been found that goats who are going to be slaughtered, stop eating a few days prior.

Any person with a bit of sincerity and emotion will not kill any animal unless absolutely necessary, and never to please his pallet and satisfy his primitive instincts!

Does humanity extend only to the animals that can be pet? It starts with parity. That is when we start being real and not pseudo.
